Summer’s coming so you better get back in the routine of slip, slop and slapping. Oh, and don’t forget your sunnies.
Though most of us are sunglass wearers throughout the entire year (and some throughout the entire day, and even indoors – who knows why), it’s never been a better time to stock up on your shades.
Tortoiseshell, black, colour-rimmed, transition, wayfarer, cat-eye, horn-rimmed … the possibilities are endless! One of the styles that I’m personally warming up to again is the good ole aviator.
Made famous by Tom Cruise in Top Gun in 1986, it’s cool, it’s casual and it’s totally practical. Did you know they were originally developed for pilots to reflect the sun away from their eyes when flying? (Hence, ‘aviators’.)
Now, you can see celebrities from Miranda Kerr to Rosie Huntington-Whitely to Jennifer Aniston sporting a pair. They’re a great way to dress an outfit down or to add an extra layer of effortless cool to an already casual ensemble.
Try teaming them with your favourite pair of skinny jeans, ankle boots, a loose tee and a leather jacket if you’re feeling a bit cold. Or maybe whip out your favourite floral dress and nude-coloured flats for a cute everyday look.
One colour that’s always bound to go well with aviators is black. Take Miranda Kerr’s look for instance. A tailored black blazer, some leather pants and she’s already to go! So understated, and so cool; you would think she was in Top Gun!
And not all aviators are block coloured! Jennifer Aniston’s frames are of a gradient kind so they’re a bit more fun if you’re looking for something like that. It works well with simple things such as tan, white and light-washed denim.
Don’t be afraid to try a pair this season – I hear it’s going to be a hit!
